The time is always right to do what is right.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

We are living in the midst of chaos with the nerve-ratting uncertainty which that brings. We’re angry, sad, scared, and tired.

In the week after Black History Month, it seems a good time to remind ourselves of the struggles others have faced for their basic rights and for safety, and to be treated with respect as citizens of this nation.

For inspiration, I often look to Martin Luther King, Jr. He was bound to be angry, sad, scared, and tired many, many times, but he did not give up. Ever. He knew that what he stood for and fought for was right.

Of all his many wise statements, one that stays with me, and especially at this time, one I use almost as a mantra is: “The time is always right to do what is right.” In its simplicity, the strength and certainty of this statement never fail to move me. I have a magnet on my refrigerator with this on it.

What we believe and hold dear is under assault every day. I want to encourage you, just as I have to encourage myself, to stay informed, stay connected to others, stay hopeful, and stay the course. This is not a sprint. This is a marathon, and yet we must keep our eye on the NOW and do what we can NOW, day by day, every day.
