Reconstructing the Gospel: Finding Freedom from Slaveholder Religion

A 6-week Book Study with Rev. Dr. Robert W. Brewer

The same Christianity that sang “Amazing grace, how sweet the sound” also perpetuated white supremacy and racial injustice in the name of Jesus.

In his book, James Wilson-Hartgrove traces his journey from the religion of the slaveholder to the Christianity of Christ. Set in North Carolina, this remarkable book addresses issues of religion, race, privilege and spirituality.

Specifically, we will:

  • Examine this ability of Christianity to claim freedom as a basic tenet while simultaneously supporting the enslavement of other
  • Explore our own relationship with racismAddress how racism both supports and damages white people
  • Seek ways to address and challenge racism and white supremacy in our own communities
  • Find and participate in spiritual practices which lead the away from a “slaveholder religion” to a religion of true freedom and equality

The School is proud to have Rev. Dr. Robert Brewer as a guest presenter. He is a United Methodist minister and has served as the Campus Chaplain and an Asst. Professor of Religion at Greensboro College since 2005. At the college, he oversees religions life and community service and teaches courses in spiritual development, scripture interpretation, homiletics, Methodism, and juggling (yes, juggling!).
